Dynamics and dynamos in planetary cores

Philippe Cardin, Université Joseph Fourier, Grenoble

The Coriolis force associated to the planetary rotation strongly influences the dynamics of the liquid metal central core of terrestrial planets. Developped thermal convection generates turbulent quasi-geostrophic flows which are able to start a self induced magnetic field. I will report on numerical and experimental models which illustrate the dynamics and dynamos in planetary cores.
