Abstract:
We present a spectroscopic study of the delta Scuti star 20CVn. The
spectra were obtained at the Observatoire de Haute Provence with the new
échelle spectrograph ELODIE. Using the correlation configuration of the
instrument, an extremely precise (<0.05 km/s) velocity curve has been
derived. The velocity variations are sinusoidal and a fit to the data provides
a peak-to-peak amplitude 2K=1.244+-0.016km/s.
We performed a mode identification by means of the moment method. The star is
found to pulsate non-radially, and is seen at a very low inclination angle.
There is ambiguity in the mode identification due to cancellation effects. Our
results point towards a tesseral or a sectorial mode with |m|=2 . Our study
gives preliminary evidence of the existence of a second mode, which could not
be identified because of our too small data set. No phase lag is detected
between the different velocity curves corresponding to different lines.
